The December meeting of South Euless Elementary's Fourth Grade Book Club focused on Towers Falling. In Jewell Parker Rhodes' novel, elementary school students in New York see that the events of 9/11 before they were born still impact their community today. Several special guests joined the book club meeting, including City of Euless Mayor Linda Martin, Officer Bird with the Dallas Police Department, firefighters from the Euless Fire Department Station 3, and Army Staff Sergeant Mark Sanchez.
Book Club members discussed details from the book, then asked their special guests "What were you doing on September 11, 2001?" Mayor Martin and the first responders shared their recollections and answered additional questions presented by the book club members. Firefighters discussed safety -- and gave each book club member a firefighter souvenir hat! Book Club leader Kari Sanchez thanked the special guests for their service, then everyone gathered outside for a group photo. South Euless appreciates the commitment our first responders have for serving our community; we are Better Together!
