Nineteen students from Harwood Junior High visited the University of Texas at Arlington campus in May. The students and their adviser, Agnieszka Beavers, are members of the TRIO Talent Search program. The Talent Search program identifies and assists individuals who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete their post-secondary education. TRIO students take field trips to college and universities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana in junior high and high school. The trips expose students to the many careers and fields of study available to them. Summer trips for high school students include over-night stays in dormitories. Students experience dorm life (including eating cafeteria food) first hand. The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth who complete high school and enroll in and complete their post-secondary education.

Harwood students toured the library and planetarium and visited the memorial of UTA alum and Space Shuttle Columbia astronaut Kalpana Chawla. Aerospace is just one of the many engineering specialties students can obtain a degree in. After the field trip, Agnieszka and chaperone Cindy Morgan (Harwood assistant principal) took the students to CiCi's Pizza for lunch. Thank you to the TRIO program for sponsoring the trip, our UTA tour guide and TRIO program advisor Victoria McWilliams, academic adviser Agnieszka Beavers, UNT HEB TRIO Talent Search Pre-College Program, CiCi's Pizza in Bedford, and our chaperone Harwood Assistant Principal Cindy Morgan!
